Savanna nightjar

On my doorstep a Savanna nightjar protects its fledgling.

...  after disturbing them, they both take flight but the fledgling has yet to learn to fly properly ...

The adult flies away leaving the young (below) still struggling to take off ...

In an attempt to create a distraction from the fledgling (above) the adult drops to the ground again some distance away and fakes injury by spreading its wings and flapping as if struggling to take off. Any eagle overhead with an eye on the fledgling would have spotted the adult as easy prey and ignored the young Nightjar. A clever but necessary survival trick as Nightjars even lay their eggs on bare ground.
